The newest album by Vampire Weekend has been out for about a week now and I’ve had it on constant replay.
This album is VW’s sophomore record and has garnered an unbelievably large buzz on the net. Many wondered whether the guys would be able to out-do their first and highly celebrated self titled album.
I can sincerely say that they have surpassed my expectations.
In Contra, the guys have musically matured but have still held to their rebellious quirks. Singer Ezra Koenig has said that this album was largely influenced by California. VW’s tropical, Afro-beat sound continues in Contra and is further complimented by the fact that VW recorded some of their songs in Mexico. Obviously, you can see how Horchata came to be.
According to Koenig, he recorded songs in the music studio of Molotov in Mexico. Talk about wild inspirations eh?
Another neat FYI, VW sampled M.I.A.’s “Hussel” in the track “Diplomat’s Son.” You can hear M.I.A’s track as the backbone while her voice peeks in and out of the song.
VW does a beautiful job mixing in their shakers, drums and other percussion instruments with the tangible sounds of the viola and violin in tracks such as “California English” and “Giving Up The Gun.”
Normally when thinking of VW, most listeners first think of charming singer Ezra Koenig, leaving the the rest of the band in a rubbed-out blur as back up. However, interestingly, drummer (amongst other things) Rostam Batmanglij produced all of the tracks, arranged strings, and mixed and engineered the tracks. That’s a good load of work that goes unnoticed and unannounced so here is my official applause/bow/shout out to Rostam! Exceptional work amigo!

Overall, this album is wonderfully addictive. The beats are heart pounding, the chorus lines are catchy and the harmonies are soother and much more calmer than in their frosh album.
I highly recommend that you buy this album, you won’t be disappointed.
For all of you who are tight on money (including myself), I suggest that you buy your album at Target because it was the cheapest I’ve seen it go for, a whopping $7.98. That’s a freaking bargain!
